Assam is a state in northeastern India known for its wildlife, archaeological sites and tea plantations. In the west, Guwahati, Assam’s largest city, features silk bazaars and the hilltop Kamakhya Temple. Umananda Temple sits on Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra river. The state capital, Dispur, is a suburb of Guwahati. The ancient pilgrimage site of Hajo and Madan Kamdev, the ruins of a temple complex, lie nearby.

Serial explosions rock Upper Assam on Republic Day

A series of seven bomb explosions by suspected ULFA-Independent militants rocked upper Assam’s Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts this morning as the nation celebrated the country’s 68th Republic Day.   In Charaideo district, three explosions were triggered by insurgent outfit.   In Sivasagar district, two explosions were triggered by the insurgent outfit at Bihubar area near Nazira.   This was followed by another blast at Convoy road in Dibrugarh.   The seventh one exploded at Tinsukia near Saikhuwa bridge.   There was no casualty or injury in any of the explosions, police said.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi struggled through decades of passive resistance before Britain finally accepted Indian independence. Self-rule had been promised during World War II, but after the war triangular negotiations between Gandhi, the British, and the Muslim League stalled over whether to partition India along religious lines. Eventually, Lord Mountbatten, the viceroy of India, forced through a compromise plan. On August 15, 1947, the former Mogul Empire was divided into the independent nations of India and Pakistan. Gandhi called the agreement the “noblest act of the British nation,” but religious strife between Hindus and Muslims soon marred his exhilaration. Hundreds of thousands died, including Gandhi, who was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in January 1948 during a prayer vigil to an area of Muslim-Hindu violence.
